Frequently Asked Questions

Always consult your Veterinarian. Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions about our products and the parasites we protect against.

Fleas, ticks & mites

  • HOW LONG DOES NEXGARD AND NEXGARD SPECTRA REQUIRE TO KILL FLEAS?

NexGard and NexGard SPECTRA will kill fleas already present on your dog within 8 hours of initial administration.

  • DOES MY DOG HAVE EAR MITES?

Symptoms of ear mite infestations usually include a combination of skin irritation; scratching around the ears, head and neck; shaking the head; ear discharge that may be dark and waxy (similar to lumps of coffee) and an unpleasant odor in the ears. Your veterinarian can confirm whether mites are present by looking at a sample of ear debris under a microscope.

  • WHY MIGHT I SEE MORE FLEAS ON MY DOG AFTER GIVING NEXGARD OR NEXGARD SPECTRA?

Because NexGard and NexGard SPECTRA overstimulate the flea's nervous system, resulting in hyperarousal, you may see fleas rise to the top of your dog's coat and appear more visible as they die. For more information, consult your Veterinarian.

  • COULD MY DOG HAVE MITES?

Mites, especially Sarcoptes mites (also known as scabies mites), can cause severe itching, hair loss, and skin infections. Other symptoms may include red, scaly skin, starting in areas of fine hair, such as the armpits and groin. Your veterinarian can confirm a mite diagnosis by looking at a skin scraping sample under a microscope. With NexGard and NexGard SPECTRA you can protect your dog from mites. A single chew, once a month, treats and controls three of the most common mites that infest dogs: Demodex mites, Sarcoptes mites, and Otodectes ear mites.
For more information, consult your Veterinarian.

  • ARE NEXGARD AND NEXGARD SPECTRA  EFFECTIVE WHEN THERE ARE SEVERE FLEA INFESTATIONS?

Yes, NexGard and NexGard SPECTRA kill fleas quickly before they lay eggs, thus preventing further infestation of the environment. If there is a moderate to heavy environmental infestation, fleas may continue to emerge into the surrounding area for weeks or months due to the continued development of flea eggs, larvae, and pupae that are already present at the time of treatment, a phenomenon known as “resurgence.”  Therefore, more than one monthly treatment may be necessary to achieve control of moderate to heavy flea infestations. In areas where fleas are common year-round, monthly treatment with any of the NexGard chews should continue year-round without interruption. To minimize the likelihood of flea reinfestation, it is important to treat all animals within the home with an effective flea control product.
For more information, consult your Veterinarian.
